John Deere is seeking engineers to help develop lithium-ion battery solutions.  John Deere sees demand growing for batteries as a sole- or hybrid-propulsion system for vehicles. Products in Deere’s portfolio such as turf equipment, compact utility tractors, small tractors, compact construction, and road building equipment could rely solely on batteries as a primary power source. Your Responsibilities


As a Senior Battery Cell Engineer for John Deere Power Systems located in Cary, NC, you will….


  • Own key elements of the cell design and interface directly with cell manufacturers, mechanical designers, and systems engineers to ensure delivery of a successfully integrated battery system
  • Design, develop and execute test methods to evaluate various lithium-ion battery cell chemistries and drive the decision for cell selection based on test results
  • Use different electrochemical techniques to identify cell degradation mechanism and use cell testing data to support control/estimation algorithms used in battery management system
  • Work closely with cell suppliers to ensure high levels of quality, performance, and safety

What Skills You Need (Required skills/experiences)


  • 5 or more years’ experience in battery material and design development including, process tracking and performance / safety characterization experience with emphasis on lithium-ion battery cells
  • 2 or more years’ experience in characterizing lithium-ion cells
  • 2 or more years’ experience integration of cells into battery systems
  • 3 or more years’ experience in product development

What Makes You Stand Out (Desired skills/experiences)


  • Understanding of next-generation cell chemistries
  • Good knowledge about battery fast charging
  • Excellent knowledge of lithium-ion battery technology trends
  • Strong understanding about electrochemistry properties of lithium-ion batteries
  • Experience in estimating the life of a lithium-ion battery
  • Knowledge of lithium-ion cell manufacturing process for multiple cell formats
  • Knowledge of agriculture and construction equipment



Ideally you will have a degree or equivalent related work experience in the following:


  • Bachelor’s degree in in Material Science, Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering or related
