The Part-Time Student Program is primarily designed to augment the Company’s regular full-time staff and is for students who work in parallel to their school schedule.


This position will be located at the Research Park on the University Of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus in Champaign, Illinois. It is open to students from all schools and not limited to those enrolled only at UIUC. 

Your Responsibilities


As a Part-Time Student-Sensing Engineer at the John Deere Technology Innovation Center in the University of Illinois Research Park in Champaign, Illinois, you will develop next-generation solutions to feed, clothe, fuel, shelter, and connect the world.


We are a multi-disciplinary Advanced Engineering team in our Emerging Technology group made up of a mix of full-time and part-time roles. We are focused on Advanced Sensing applications. We rapidly and iteratively design, build, and test ideas and technology that are usually new to Deere, and sometimes new to the world.


Successful candidates in these roles will be focused on developing sensing systems to solve customer problems by detecting chemical, biological, and mechanical traits in our customers’ operating environments.

What Skills You Need


  • You need to be working on your BS, MS or PhD in electrical engineering, physics, engineering physics or a related field
  • While most of our students are from the University of Illinois, other students are welcome to apply
  • Graduation year of May 2023 or later
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above
  • Ability to work 15-to-20 hours per week during the school year
  • Ability to work 35-to-40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to commute to the work location on a regular basis
  • An understanding of the physical characteristics of different EMF ranges and how they can be exploited to “see” in complex, dynamic environments
  • The ability to develop a quick prototype to test the viability of a sensing approach in a lab environment
  • The ability to execute a test plan to get reliable, repeatable, well-documented results in a lab environment
  • Hands-on experience with sensors like imaging, LIDAR, IR, RADAR and other RF applications
  • Comfort working in a diverse team
  • The ability to communicate well in both written and verbal forms

What Makes You Stand Out


  • The ability to execute a test plan to get reliable, repeatable, well-documented results in a field or customer environment
  • Proficiency in AI/ML working with sensor data
  • Proficiency in soldiering and other electrical bench work
  • Expertise in Soil Science, Crop Science, or related fields
  • The ability to develop a reliable, repeatable test plan based on requirements
  • Ability to do basic scripting in a language like Python
  • Understanding of the work our customers do, including agriculture, turf care, earth work, road-building, or forestry
  • Experience in antenna design
  • Experience with UWB, VNA, BLE, and WiFi RF systems
  • Experience in mitigating the impact of attenuation
  • Experience in robotics, or other advanced automation
