The European Technology Innovation Center (ETIC) of John Deere is part of a global R&D network in Kaiserslautern. Its focus is on the research on and development of future trends and technologies in the area of mobile agricultural and construction machines in close collaboration with diverse research institutes.


The European Technology Innovation Center is offering a Postgraduate Position/PhD position on the topic


“Sensor based precise nutrient application: Dependencies of sensing and placement to improve efficiency”


In this position you will work on a project on sensor based precise nutrient application. This includes planning, setup, and execution of field tests in Europe as well as customer requirement definitions to optimize crop production utilizing sensor information and precision guidance. Statistical methods will be used to derive results from information gathered.  Socialization and transfer of results in a viable format is part of this position - in the scientific community and inside the company.


The Position is available starting July and limited to 3 years. The position is based in Kaiserslautern. During test execution, agronomic validation and for scouting, physical presence is necessary over longer time periods close to the field trials and on the fields.


Your profile should include:


  • Above-average master’s degree in agriculture, crop science or similar fields of study qualifying for a PhD
  • Detailed knowledge of agricultural production systems and practices
  • Experienced understanding of machine forms relevant for nutrient application
  • Good knowledge of customer’s crop nutrition management practices
  • Good knowledge of small grain crop nutrition needs
  • Field test experience w/ crop nutrition trials
  • Experience in use of georeferenced data and regressions
  • Driver license for tractors and cars (B, BE & T)
  • Language: English and one of the following: French/German/Russian
  • Basic MS Office Knowledge
