Your Responsibilities


As a Safety Manager for John Deere Ottumwa Works, you will plan, design, implement and evaluate health and safety management programs and processes to promote a safe work environment and ensure compliance with all appropriate laws, regulations, and standards at a manufacturing facility with assembly and other industrial operations.  


In addition, you will:

  • Report directly to the Factory Manager and will be a member of the leadership staff for Ottumwa
  • Prepare strategic and tactical plans as required to meet goals around compliance and injury reduction
  • Analyze appropriate health and safety metrics to identify trends and opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Establish and manage processes for periodic inspections, risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective action assurance.
  • Manage processes for workers compensation case management and return to work programs
  • Establish, maintain and deliver safety education and training for all employees 
  • Act as a liaison with external regulatory agencies and safety suppliers
  • Ensure collaboration with engineering to reduce process risk and improve ergonomics
  • Develop and manage the departmental budget

What Skills You Need

  • 4 or more years of experience in the Occupational Health and Safety profession in a manufacturing or industrial environment
  • Investigation skills to determine root cause and conduct trend analysis of incidents
  • Knowledge of governmental/agency regulatory requirements or legislation, occupational health principles, occupational safety programs, and ergonomic principles, with the ability to apply to workplace environments
  • Skill in interpersonal communications, negotiation, and conflict resolution
  • Understanding of occupational health, safety, industrial hygiene, and ergonomic principles
  • Knowledge of worker's compensation laws and regulations
  • Ability to travel domestically on occasion

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and factory operations
  • Team leadership experience in a collaborative working environment
  • Proven history of delivering sustainable safety improvements 
  • Experience working with collective bargaining units
  • Master’s degree in a Science or Business Administration discipline
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation


Ideally, you will have a degree or equivalent related work experience in the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering or related discipline
