Cyber security is an increasingly important aspect of any modern and connected vehicle system.  In this role as an Embedded Cyber Security Engineer, you will help Deere defend its intelligent and connected vehicles from adversaries of growing sophistication by designing security into onboard systems, monitoring the embedded threat landscape and researching and applying cutting edge embedded security technologies.

You will work closely with information Security teams, John Deere product engineers, and product architects to develop tools, techniques , designs  and processes which result in vehicle systems that are resilient to adversaries.  Additionally, you will assist validating and remediated disclosed vulnerabilities, and responding to adversarial action against Deere’s intelligent vehicle systems. You will also:


  • Drive Embedded software cybersecurity requirements and security features development
  • Develop threat models using industry best practices
  • Analyze, define and build embedded cryptography capabilities
  • Provide guidance and technical direction to other members on the delivery team and some leadership; provide coaching and mentoring to others within the technical discipline
  • Solve complex problems pertaining to on-board and vehicle related cyber security threats and may need to confer with senior roles in developing a response and action plans

Proven Technical Skills and Experiences

  • Experience with embedded software engineering and IoT systems (5+ years)  
  • Familiarity with vehicle network architecture, modules, and protocols (CAN etc.)
  • Experience with public key encryption, cryptographic concepts and systems designed to manage public key infrastructure at scale (PKI) (5+ years)  
  • Foundational technical aptitude related to Cloud computing – the risks and benefits of using a vendor’s remote servers to store, manage and process an organization’s data
  • Proven experience in an Agile/Scrum team environment or experience in embedded software delivery lifecycle (5+ years)  
  • Understanding in Forensics – investigation and analysis of how and why a breach or other compromise occurred (5+ years)
  • Understanding in Vulnerability and risk assessment – important components of risk management (2+ years)
  • Understanding of vehicle security frameworks and standards  (e.g. ISO 21434) – Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying standards and specifications (2+ years)
  • 5 + years of experience embedded Linux or other Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS)
  • Experience performing threat models of connected systems, including embedded / IoT commentary (2+ years)  

Interpersonal, Leadership and Teaming Competencies

  • Capable of collaborating with multiple technical and business stakeholders to provide information technology solutions
  • Skilled in interpersonal communications, negotiation, and conflict resolution
  • Proven experience as a work lead providing technical coaching and mentoring to others
  • 4+ years in an information security analyst or engineering role
  • Knowledge of analysis practices for role specific security functions, processes, and procedures as well as a foundation in the NIST Cyber Security Framework  

Education (or equivalent work experience)

  • Bachelor's degree Computer Engineering, Cyber Security / Security Engineering, Computer Science
  • Advanced Degree preferred
