This position may be located in Waterloo, IA or Urbandale, IA per the hiring manager's discretion. This may be dependent on the successful candidate's background, experience, and proficiency.


This position is eligible for a flexible work schedule arrangement at the present time.  The arrangement may be delayed for training or other job acclimation purposes and remains subject to change.


Your Responsibilities


John Deere is currently hiring a Data Collection Application Engineer for the Intelligent Solutions Group (ISG) located in Waterloo, IA, or Urbandale, IA.

As a Data Collection Infrastructure Engineer for the John Deere Intelligent Solutions Group (ISG), you will work with internal ISG clients to provide methods for fast and accurate data collection and aggregation as necessary across all John Deere locations. As a Data Collection Infrastructure Engineer, the solutions you create can consolidate a month-long process into just a few hours, ultimately allowing John Deere to resolve product issues much faster.


Additionally, you will….


  • Support the definition of Data Collection Infrastructure to meet the needs of multiple Platforms and Production Systems
  • Support Data Collection Consumers with deployment and troubleshooting of devices on a fleet-wide scale
  • Act as the ‘Voice of the Customer’ to relay requests for functionality from Platforms to the Infrastructure Team
  • Interface with Embedded Infrastructure Leadership to ensure alignment between Embedded Infrastructure and Data Collection Infrastructure
  • Enable the widespread consumption of collected data by working with the Infrastructure Team to define standard ways of transmitting, storing and presenting data to consumers

What Skills You Need


  • Expert level of experience with digital networking and embedded communications infrastructure (CAN, Ethernet, IoT, Memory Access, etc)
  • Expert level of experience with remote electronic system troubleshooting techniques
  • Experience with Linux variants (Ubuntu)
  • Experience with Cloud Storage/Service systems (AWS)
  • Experience using scripting languages (e.g. Python, Perl, etc.).
  • Good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to influence behavior across teams outside of your departments span of control
  • Strong analytical skills to break down, solve, and convey complex features/issues to engineers in other disciplines.


What Makes You Stand Out


  • Experience designing, developing, testing, or integrating products that were successfully delivered to production, especially electrical and mechatronic systems.
  • Experience with on-machine agriculture machine testing at test sites or customer sites, Deere equipment experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Harness Design and applicable design tools
  • Exposure to data security techniques and customer data use rules and regulations
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
  • Exposure to projects that generate large volumes of Data




Ideally you will have a degree or equivalent related work experience in the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent work experience.
