This position is eligible for remote work at the present time. The arrangement may be delayed for training or other job acclimation purposes and remains subject to change. Ideally, the chosen candidate will live near or be willing to relocate to Cary, NC.

Your Responsibilities

 

As a Senior Battery Management System Controls Engineer for JD Power Systems located in Cary, North Carolina you will:

 

  • Lead the design, development, and model-based implementation of battery management system algorithms including state of charge (SOC), state of power (SOP), state of health (SOH), balancing, state machine, charging, thermal management, diagnostics, and safety functions, etc.
  • Lead the integration of model-based battery management system algorithm software code to the rest of the embedded system hand-coded software.
  • Lead battery management system algorithm tuning based on application requirements as well as algorithm verification & validation efforts.
  • Interface with battery testing team to design relevant software-in-loop, hardware-in-loop and hardware tests.
  • Interface with battery modeling team to create model-in-loop simulation for virtual testing of battery management system algorithms as well as to support higher level system simulation (e.g. drivetrain simulation or vehicle simulation).
  • Lead the exploration of advanced battery management system algorithms (e.g. SOH estimation using machine learning methods) with deep theoretical understanding.
  • Create algorithm design, flow chart, tuning, verification & validation, and associated documentation.
  • Interface with battery systems & applications teams to ensure proper battery management features are developed in support of expected battery functionality, performance, safety, and compliance.

What Skills You Need

 

  • 5 or more years of state estimation, parameter estimation, and control theory experience
  • 4 or more years of battery algorithm development experience
  • 3 or more years of battery algorithm model-based design and simulation experience
  • 3 or more years battery algorithm tuning and verification & validation experience
  • 3 or more years of battery algorithm test design experience
  • 2 or more years of advanced battery algorithm research and development experience
  • 5 or more years of experience contributing as a core team member on a cross-functional team
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 15%

What Makes You Stand Out

 

  • Deep understanding of lithium-ion battery technology
  • Deep understanding of a variety of controls-oriented electrical, thermal, and aging battery models with an understanding of electrochemical battery models
  • Deep knowledge of state estimation, parameter estimation, machine learning, and control methods (e.g. Extended Kalman Filter, Least Squares Regression, Neural Network, Optimal Control, etc.) with extensive experience applying such techniques towards the development of advanced model-based battery algorithms plus an understanding of embedded software 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, tune parameters, and validate model-based battery algorithms via experiments
  • Familiar with battery test equipment such as cyclers, environmental chambers, data acquisition plus experience with MIL, SIL, and HIL testing methodologies for battery management system testing
  • Familiarity with functional safety and cyber security standards
  • Demonstrated ability to work with battery test, battery cell, and battery systems & applications teams
  • Self-starter and passionate about vehicle electrification & battery technology
  • Doctoral degree in engineering with emphasis on battery algorithms and control systems
  • Experience with construction, agricultural, and turf vehicle engineering

Education

 

Ideally, you will have a degree or equivalent related work experience in the following: 

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering with battery algorithms and control systems experience
